When we began 2021 with another stay-at-home order here in Ontario, our office had begun to work remotely once again and we were intrigued by Robin Hardman’s article “Don’t Read This Article and Get Back to Work!” that she recently published on www.TLNT.com. Although we understand the concern employers have about employees remaining productive while working from home, the need to utilize a surveillance software to monitor online behaviour and activity surprised us. Sure, when we first closed our office during the first wave of the pandemic in early 2020, we were uncertain how working from home was going to work for our team, however, it became easier to adjust to the new norm by providing resources, implementing follow-ups where needed, and trusting the team. Naturally, we agree with Robin’s argument that an employee’s performance should be measured by the actual work they do; the assignments that are completed and the deadlines that are met and not the length of time they sat at a desk or the words they entered into a search engine. The quality of the work that is completed should be your indicator of the employee’s performance.
We hope you enjoy this article. And we hope you continue to stay safe and healthy!
